Rationale and Explanation for the creation of the SVSHS Virtual Library Site

Your Friendly Library Staff

The Library is currently staffed by:

Busy Bee BearJose Chow (TIC) - Jose is the "busy bee libearian".  She's the person to see if you want things to happen NOW!! (or even yesterday)...Jose fits more into a single day than most of us can achieve in a week.

Computer BearJean Anning
(Teacher Librarian) Jean's the "computer libearian".  She can often be seen standing in front of a computer or printer wondering why it won't do what it's been told!

Party BearAlison Spicer-Wensley (Teacher Librarian) - Alison is the "literary libearian".  I'm convinced she has read ALL the books in the library!
Party BearSally Bradley (Library Officer) - Sally is the "party libearian".  Sally organises everything and knows everyone.  Her specialty is making people happy.

Library Cards and Borrowing

All students are issued with a free library card at the beginning of Year 8 and again at the beginning of Year 11.  If you lose your library card you will need to come and see one of the library staff and pay $2 for a replacement.

YOU NEED A LIBRARY CARD to borrow resources, to use the library computers, for identification on public transport.

Library resources - What we've got and how to borrow it

Resources available for borrowing include:

Fiction and non-fiction texts
Reference texts
Videos - see Video Acceptable Use Policy
Magazines
Tape recorder
CD player
Overhead projector
Projection screens
Multi-media projector
A selection of charts and posters
A selection of educational computer CDs
Magazines and newspapers for cutting up

Lower school students may borrow up to 4 items; Upper school students may borrow up to 8 items for a two week period.  All you need to do is bring your library card and the book(s) to the front desk.

Teachers may organise bulk loans on specific topics.  Please allow enough time for processing.

If you happen to lose a library book please come and see one of the librarians.

Library Rules - For Students and Teachers!

  • Classes line up quietly outside the library and wait until the teacher arrives.
  • Bags may be brought into the library but are not to be carried around.
  • Hats off in the library.
  • Students using the Internet must bring their library card, with Internet User sticker, to the front desk.  Cards can be collected when you have finished using the computer.  NO CARD - NO INTERNET!
  • Students violating the "Internet Acceptable Use Policy"  will have their internet access revoked.
  • Students with overdue resources or without a library card cannot borrow. NO CARD - NO BORROWING!
  • Students are to remain in their booked area until the siren.  Please don't  wait at the Exit door.

Using Athena to Search the Collection

The Library uses an automated system called Athena.  You should be able to search the Swan View Library collection from any computer connected to the school network.

This icon  or a similar looking short cut should appear on the task bar at the bottom of the computer screen or you can load the library home page (http://www.svshs.wa.edu.au/library)and search from there.

If you need assistance using the Athena program come down to the Library and we'll happily give you a basic introduction to the system.

Video Classification

The library has an extensive video collection.  Videos are available for loan to both staff and students.
