The Girls Academy is the leading provider of school-based engagement programs for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander girls in Australia. The program is community-driven and provides comprehensive in-school support to give girls the tools they need to engage in their education, achieve their goals and change their communities.
Our key program objectives are:
- Increase school attendance;
- Advance academic and personal achievement;
- Improve Year 12 graduation rates; and
- Facilitate post school transitions
The Girls Academy is a full-time program and centres around an Academy room within the school which acts as a sanctuary for the girls to convene and connect before, during and after school.
The program’s funding model consists of one third each from the Australian Federal Government, the relevant State or Territory Government, and from the coporate/philanthropic sector.
Each Academy has a minimum of two full-time staff who work directly with the girls to provide individual mentoring and support, as well as cultural connection, empowerment, sports and extra-curricular programs and activities. 80% of staff are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women.
